Sol de America vs General Diaz
Competition: Paraguay Apertura
Date: 4 June 2018
Kick-off: 23:00 CET
Héctor Marecos is no longer Sol de América’s coach. He resigned after their 3-1 defeat at Independiente de Campo Grande a few days ago. Alfredo Vera will act as Sol’s interim coach in the last two Apertura matches. Marecos spent a total of 33 games in charge, including two in the Copa Sudamericana. Under him, Sol won 12 matches, lost 11, drew 10, scored 52 goals, and conceded 53. The overall feeling is that the team should have done better, based on their roster. They are 6th in the table, they have qualified for the second round of the Copa Sudamericana, but truth is, they were… beyond disappointing in many games, even against much weaker opponents. Incredibly, they have won just one of their last 10 matches(!).
General Díaz played their part in producing one of the most entertaining 45 minutes of the season a few days ago, when they hosted 3 de Febrero. There was no score until the 55th minute, when Enrique Borja scored a goal many famous wingers would envy. Come 80th minute, General Díaz were 1-2 down(!). They found it in them to strike back, scored twice in a matter of minutes, and won the game 3-2, “catching” Sol on 24 points. One thing they have in common with Sol is that they too have qualified for the second round of the Copa Sudamericana. Unlike Sol though, they have looked more… reliable the last two and a half months. They have lost four of their last 14 games, but all four were against the Apertura’s top-4 teams, Olimpia, Cerro Porteño, Nacional and Libertad, and three of those defeats came away from home.
