South Africa U20 vs France U20
Competition: World Rugby Under 20 Championship
Date: 18 June 2017
Kick-off: 13:30 CET
The play-off for third is an intriguing game as France and South Africa have met already this tournament, and it ended in a draw. There is also a match between the senior sides of these countries on the same weekend.
When South Africa entered this tournament, they came up against a French side that was clearly more prepared than the favourite Baby Boks. The Junior Boks have always been a major threat at the Under-20 level, and facing France they would have thought it would be an easy stroll in the park. However, France dominated the game and it was just a late rally that saw the Baby Boks earn a much needed draw. Other than that blip the junior Springboks have been much better, they had no problems with Georgia and Argentina in their group, and although they lost to England in their semi-final, it was a close game against the defending Champs.
For France, they are always a good force in the Junior World Champs, but they were probably the biggest surprise in the top tier semifinal, pushing aside the likes of Wales and Australia. France picked up that draw against South Africa, but they also brushed aside Georgia, however, they just snuck past an Argentina side that has been disappointing for the most part. France have the skillful players, and the ability as a side, but they lack that killer instinct, and that was shown in their semifinal against the Baby Blacks from New Zealand. France will know they had the better of South Africa in the first game and will want to use that mental edge going into this vital clash.
South Africa U20 vs France U20: Playoff performances
South Africa always had a mega task ahead of them facing the defending champion England side, but they did well to make it competitive, losing the game in the last movement as England scored a late try to win, the conversion sinking them 24-22.
France had an equally tough task against New Zealand, but they did put on a good performance scoring some great tries as they went down 39-26.
South Africa U20 vs France U20: Prediction
France have shown their skill, and their ability, but they do not have the most clinical winning mentality. Whereas the Baby Boks do, and they have gotten stronger as the tournament has worn on. The tight loss against England will motivate South Africa to third place.
