Spartak Moscow vs Rapid Vienna
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 29 November 2018
Kick-off: 16:50 CET
Three weeks ago, at halftime, Spartak Moscow were practically eliminated; they were losing 2-3 to Rangers at home, they were getting left six points behind the Scottish side, and four behind Villarreal. Somehow, Spartak scored twice in a matter of… 100 seconds, in the 58th and 59th minute, and then managed to protect that 4-3 lead. It was their first win in the group, enough to have them second in the table, level on points with Rangers, but with an advantage over the Glasgow side (the game between the two in Scotland, was a goalless draw). A win over Rapid would turn them into favorites to finish in the top-2. In two weeks they are visiting Villarreal, who, depending how their game this week goes, may have already qualified by then. Last weekend they beat Krylya Sovetov 3-1 at home. They are just 7th(!) in Russia’s championship.
In this super open group, bottom-of-the-table Rapid Vienna are just two points behind leaders Villarreal. Three weeks ago, these two drew without goals in Austria, a result that kept Villarreal unbeaten, and Rapid alive in the fight for a top-2 spot. What’s alarming for them is that they haven’t won in their last four games, three of those in their championship. Actually, they lost their last two, including that 0-1 to LASK last weekend, at home. They are no higher than 8th(!) in their championship. Their last group match in two weeks is at home, against Rangers.
