Sporting Cristal vs Lanus
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 8 March 2018
Kick-off: 01:45 CET
This season’s Sporting Cristal, despite leading in Peru’s championship, makes… little sense. They concede one goal in three matches before traveling to Lanús, including a 2-0 win at Alianza Lima, and they concede four in Argentina. It was Lanús, not… Sport Rosario, but still, Sporting Cristal looked absolutely pitiful defensively in that match, and it wasn’t the only time. A week ago they lost 5-3 at Ayacucho, only to bounce back with a 5-1 triumph over Universidad San Martín de Porres. My point is, Cristal look capable of the best and the worst, not only against opponents of Lanús’ level, but even against… Ayacucho. On the other hand, they have scored a lot. Even in the games they lost, they scored two and three goals, at Lanús and Ayacucho respectively.
Gonzalo di Renzo’s goal in the 86th minute made a big difference in the first leg, as a 4-2 is very different to a 3-2. The bad news at Lanús have to do with Lautaro Acosta. He created the first goal in the first leg, scored the second, won the penalty that led to their third, but he is injured, and even though he did travel to Lima, he is not expected to play. Without him, Lanús are a different team. How different? It remains to be seen… Last Friday they lost 2-1 at Arsenal, continuing with their poor results in the Argentina Superliga, where they are just 22nd(!!). As I wrote in the preview of the first leg, the Copa Sudamericana is a whole different case, is a fresh start for them, I backed them to win the first leg, and I’m definitely backing them to qualify.

Sporting Cristal vs Lanus: Head to head Stats
Sporting Cristal have never hosted Lanús before.
Sporting Cristal vs Lanus: Prediction
I’m leaving winners and losers aside, mostly because Lanús are still qualifying even by losing (depending on the score, of course). I’m turning to goals instead.
Sporting Cristal vs Lanus: Betting Tips
Despite having seen six goals in the first leg, I expect this game to be totally-totally different, mostly because Lanús will (I think) look much more focused on their defensive duties, plus, will be playing without injured Acosta. “Under 2.5 goals” is at 1.73, not too tempting, so I would take the extra risk to suggest “under 1.5”, at 2.90, expecting Lanús to do their best to keep the game as… uneventful as possible. “No” on “both teams to score” is at 1.80, another way to approach this match.
