Sydney FC vs Shanghai Shenhua
Competition: AFC Champions League
Date: 17 April 2018
Kick-off: 12:00 CET
Sydney FC were with their back against the wall two weeks ago, when they visited Suwon Bluewings, they needed a win and nothing but a win to have any chance of finishing in the top two, only problem was… they hadn’t won a single game until then. Incredible Sydney, not only beat Suwon, but they even earned the advantage over them, in case they finish level on points. They had lost 2-0 in Australia, earlier in the group stage, and beat Bluewings 1-4 in Suwon!!!! They are on five points, two less than Suwon, meaning that they are obliged to beat Shanghai Shenhua, and at the same time they need Kashima Antlers not to lose at home to Suwon. I repeat, if Sydney and Suwon finish level on points (eight each, if Suwon draw in Japan), it’s the A-League side that will finish second. Last Friday they beat Melbourne Victory 1-0 at home, finished the A-League regular season first (14 whole points above second-placed Newcastle Jets), and are waiting for their opponent in the semifinal, in two weeks.
Shanghai Shenhua made their own bed, they have no one to blame but themselves for the ridiculous way they “managed” to get eliminated two weeks ago. Less than half an hour into the game against Kashima Antlers at home, they were 2-0 up(!). They stayed there until the 58th minute. A win not only would have kept them alive in the fight for a top 2 finish, but would have made them favourites to qualify for the last 16 of the competition. Final score, 2-2, a… monumental shot on their own foot, at home, in front of their own fans. They are on four points, they can reach seven, which is how many Suwon Bluewings have, but even if they finish level on points, they have a disadvantage, they have just one point from their two matches against them. On Friday they drew 2-2 to Guangzhou Evergrande, and are now fourth in China’s Super League, on 11 points from six matches.
