Thun vs Spartak Moscow
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: 8 August 2019
Kick-off: 19:00 CET
Thun finished fourth last season in Switzerland’s championship, reached the Cup final as well, and that’s how they earned this Europa League ticket, skipping the first two qualifying rounds. The new championship season in Switzerland started almost three weeks ago, and things have not gone well for Marc Schneider’s team; after two draws, last weekend they lost 2-3 to Basel at home, despite taking an early lead. Schneider was left with a bittersweet taste, explaining reporters after the game that the result was obviously negative, but the team did spent good parts of the game playing the kind of football their fans want to see them play. On the other hand, they committed many mistakes, several of those under very little pressure. The fact that they are facing such a strong opponent in the Europa League third qualifying round is not making their life any easier…
All Spartak Moscow managed last season was to finish 5th in Russia’s championship, nothing impressive, but good enough to earn them this Europa League ticket. Just like Thun, they didn’t have to play in the first two qualifying rounds. Another thing they have in common is that they have looked poor thus far in their championship; they did beat Sochi 1-0 on their debut, but ever since then, they have picked up just two points from three matches. Just last weekend they drew 0-0 at home with city rivals Dinamo. They made headlines recently, signing André Schürrle on loan from Borussia Dortmund. The German, who is actually only 28 no matter if it feels like he has been around since… ever, played last weekend, looked rather rusty, not in tune with the rest of the team, but his coach, Oleg Kononov, was quick to point out that he just joined the club, and will take him a while to… find his way around.

Thun vs Spartak Moscow: Prediction
Both teams have looked poor in their last games, but at the end of the day, Spartak have a superior roster, and I expect that to earn them a good result in Switzerland.

Spartak’s win in “draw no bet” is at 1.67. Their double chance pays less than 1.40, but goes up to 2.20 if combined with “under 2.5 goals”.
