Tijuana vs Motagua
Competition: CONCACAF Champions League
Date: 28 February 2018
Kick-off: 04:00 CET
Tijuana should feel… flattered by that 1-0 win in Texas last week. They were playing against a very modest opponent, Motagua, not even in Honduras, but in the USA, so beating them by one goal was the absolute minimum they were expected to do. They were lucky not to concede, and in the 71st minute they scored themselves, taking a big advantage ahead of the return leg. Last weekend they drew 0-0 at Club América, in Mexico’s championship. Gibrán Lajud, their goalkeeper, is the one who left his mark on the game the most, with a series of good saves. They are just 10th in the Clausura, on 13 points from nine matches.
They are competing in the CONCACAF Champions League having finished first in the regular season of the 2017 Clausura in Mexico.
Lajud, Tijuana’s goalkeeper, the one who was fundamental in their 0-0 draw at América last weekend, said that the tie with Motagua is “open”, despite the Mexican side’s 1-0 victory as visitors last week. Lajud doesn’t take anything for granted, and he’s probably right, having seen how the first leg went. Motagua were very competitive, and didn’t really deserve to lose. They didn’t play in Honduras’ championship last weekend, they spent a whole week in Texas (where they “hosted” Tijuana last week), they played a friendly game instead, against a local team, and scored several goals. To eliminate Tijuana, they need to score at least once, and of course they need to win. Not even a draw will be enough. Motagua are competing in the CONCACAF CL as the Apertura 2016 and Clausura 2017 champions in Honduras.

Tijuana vs Motagua: Head to head Stats
Last week’s game was the first ever between these two.
Tijuana vs Motagua: Prediction
Despite Motagua’s more than decent performance last week, I don’t expect them to avoid defeat in Mexico. I don’t believe in their… miracle to qualify, I don’t even expect them to get an “honourable” draw.
Tijuana vs Motagua: Betting Tips
Tijuana’s win pays just 1.31. Unlike last week, this time I expect more goals, at least three. “Over 2.5 goals” is at 1.76 betting odds, and around 1.90 if combined with Tijuana’s victory.
