Tijuana vs New York RB
Competition: CONCACAF Champions League
Date: 7 March 2018
Kick-off: 04:00 CET
Given that Tijuana’s win over Motagua last week was paying very little, I took the risk to combine it with “over 2.5”. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, as Tijuana lost… a dozen chances to score more, literally, more than a dozen. As for that goal they conceded, it was in the 87th minute, they had taken the lead less than three minutes into the game, so they were never really threatened. They had beaten Motagua 1-0 in the first leg, the Honduras side needed two goals after that one they conceded in the 3rd minute, and even after equalising they didn’t manage to create a real chance. Last weekend, Tijuana beat Lobos BUAP 3-1 at home, climbing up sixth in the table of Mexico’s championship.
New York RB earned a… professional win last week, hosting CD Olimpia. They had drawn 1-1 in the first leg, they had the advantage, failed to take the lead in the first half, but two goals relatively early in the second half put the game, the qualification, beyond Olimpia’s reach. Those two games against Olimpia are the only official ones they have played in 2018, unlike Tijuana who have given way more, as the championship in Mexico is in full swing. The MLS season started last weekend, but New York RB didn’t play. There were huge news at the club these last days though, as Felipe Martins was traded, sent to Vancouver Whitecaps. Felipe was not just “one of RB’s players”, he had started in 123 of the 125 games he played for them since 2015, he was considered an emblematic figure, not to mention a fans’ favourite. Still, he got traded, with Tim Parker following the opposite path, from Vancouver to RB.

Tijuana vs New York RB: Head to head Stats
Tijuana have never faced New York RB before.
Tijuana vs New York RB: Prediction
Tijuana are considered clear favourites to win the game, and I’m going with that, because generally, I distrust MLS teams when playing in Mexico. The hosts always have an extra motive in such games, and an extra motive usually goes a long way in football.
Tijuana vs New York RB: Betting Tips
A simple Tijuana win pays 1.65. For more than that, I would gamble with Tijuana and over 2.5 goals, at 3.20(!). I expect the hosts to score at least twice, and the third goal to come from either side. Tijuana scored twice against Motagua in the previous round, both games combined, but they created countless chances, especially at home, and they have the players to score, and score a lot.
