Toulon vs Pau
Competition: Top 14
Date: 06 May 2017
Kick-off: 20:45 CET
Toulon do not have to be too fearful of dropping out of the playoffs spot, nor do they have to aspire to be in the Top two, as that is out of reach, their final game against Pau will more be about getting momentum heading into the playoffs.
For Pau, it is a slightly different story. They are not in the playoff zone as it stands, but with the log jam that has happened in the middle of the table, there are five teams outside of the top six that can still reach the last playoff spot, and one of those is Pau. Stade Francais currently have the last playoff spot, and that seems to be the only one that is truly reachable for a host of teams. If Stade cannot win their game against Montpellier – which is likely – the door is open for the likes of Racing Metro, Lyon, brive and Bordeaux, but it is also open for Pau. Pau will need both Stade Francais, and Racing Metro, to lose their games for this to become a reality.
Toulon, who are much more used to simply waltzing into the semifinals, have to be content with facing a quarter final route through the pay off. They are in fourth spot, and too far off to even contest the top two spots. They are also far enough ahead of the teams below them in fifth and sixth to be worried about falling out of the playoff spots. Of course there can still be some shifting and sliding around the the quarter finals, so it will always be in Toulon’s best interest to beat Pau and work towards getting a home quarter final at the very least.
Toulon vs Pau: Current form
Toulon have that winning feeling as their last three encounters, including an away game to Bordeaux, have all been wins, and comfortable ones at that.
Pau on the other hand have lost a lot of form. They had a fantastic run not too long ago but their last four games have only seen them win once – but it was their most recent game against Brive.
Toulon vs Pau: Prediction
Toulon have not reached the heights of their standing at all this season, they have been up and down and have played some blinders, but it has been a generally inconsistent performance. They will however always be a much better team at home and will push a Pau team that has waned recently to their max. Expect Toulon to win, but it won’t be a classic or sterling display.
Toulon vs Pau: Tips
Toulon need to rely on their stars as the season reaches the business end, so back their international veterans like Ma’a Nonu and Bryan Habana to get on the score sheet.
