Universidad Catolica vs Fluminense
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 27 July 2017
Kick-off: 00:15 CET
A month ago, I backed Fluminense not just to win (that was rather obvious), but to keep a clean sheet as well. They ended up doing even better than what I expected, winning the game 4-0, and pretty much securing their presence in the last 16 of the competition. Ever since then, Universidad Catolica have won just one game, drawn one, and lost three, scoring just two goals in all those five matches. Important detail though! Gustavo Díaz, a 42-year-old Uruguayan coach, took over last Saturday, right after Universidad Catolica’s 2-0 defeat at Delfin, and after training the team for a few days, he will make his debut on the bench in this match versus Fluminense. The first he did upon arrival in Quito was praise his players, in an obvious attempt to lift their spirits.
Fluminense need to commit the biggest suicide in their history to get eliminated by Universidad Catolica after the 4-0 of the first leg four weeks ago. Not that things are… marvelous at the club. Last weekend they lost 1-0 at home to Corinthians, and now have just one win in their last six Brasileirao matches. If that’s not enough, the team keep losing important players. Young striker Richarlison did travel with the group to Ecuador, but it’s not sure he will play. His transfer to Ajax seems to be a matter of hours, maximum a day or two, so the last thing Flu want is lose the 15 million euros they expect to make from this deal (well, actually, half, since they own only part of his rights), by having the player injured in a game that he doesn’t really need to play (after that 4-0 in Rio de Janeiro).
Universidad Catolica vs Fluminense: Head-to-head Stats
The game in Brazil four weeks ago, was the first ever between these two.
Universidad Catolica vs Fluminense: Prediction
Super tricky game, taking into consideration the result of the first match, the fact that Flu traveled to Ecuador without key players (are being given a rest), and also the presence of a new coach at Universidad Catolica. If they had looked more competitive in their domestic games, I would back the hosts to win, but… they have looked so-so poor, that I don’t expect them to win not even a relatively indifferent and definitely alternative (lineup-wise) Fluminense.
Universidad Catolica vs Fluminense: Tips
I’m counting on Flu’s reserves to look eager to show things, and earn at least a draw. ‘Draw or Fluminense’ is at 1.80, and I prefer it much better to Universidad Catolica’s 1.90.
