Universidad Concepcion vs Vasco da Gama
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 1 February 2018
Kick-off: 00:45 CET
Universidad Concepción is not among the most well-known Chilean clubs, but they’re definitely interesting to watch, to follow. Their coach alone is a reason to take interest in them. Francisco Bozán is just 31 years old, a former player of the club, a guy who is described as a young Marcelo Bielsa or Jorge Sampaoli, because he seems to love attacking football. The club signed a good number of players these last weeks, even earlier this week they welcomed Álvaro Salazar from Colo Colo, he is expected to be their regular goalkeeper, but judging by what they have been telling the Press these last days, they are… holding a small basket, knowing that Vasco da Gama are… Vasco, and the return leg is in Rio, in a week from now. Do keep in mind, the Chileans haven’t played an official match since December 20. Their previous (and only) experience in the Copa Libertadores was in 2004, when they earned two draws in their group, losing four matches. They are a fairly young club, founded in the 90s, and Chile has a very competitive football scene, so it’s not a big surprise they don’t have more appearances in the Libertadores.
An interesting detail about Vasco da Gama is that out of the 21 players who flew to Chile, eight are newly-signed. Colombian centre-forward Duvier Riascos is a.. special case, as he has played for Vasco before, in 2016. Back then, Vasco were in the Serie B, they got promoted, and last season they did better than expected, finishing 7th in the Brasileirao, earning a ticket for the Copa Libertadores qualifiers. Last weekend they drew 0-0 to Flamengo in the championship of the Rio de Janeiro State. They have just four points from four matches, having already lost to Bangu and Cabofriense. It goes without saying, their roster is beyond comparison (putting it next to Universidad Concepción’s), they have the return leg at home, a very “heavy” jersey, it will be a major surprise if they get eliminated, but… with this being the first leg, I won’t be surprised if they don’t look 100% concentrated and motivated to win.

Universidad Concepción have never played against Vasco before.
Universidad Concepcion vs Vasco da Gama: Prediction
As previously mentioned, I don’t doubt Vasco’s superiority, but I do doubt their… concentration level in this particular game. In other words, I don’t trust them to win, despite being considered favourites.
Universidad Concepcion vs Vasco da Gama: Betting Tips
The hosts’ double chance pays 1.57, not fantastic, but it suits my hunch that Vasco will look just… average, and won’t die trying to win this game, knowing they have the return leg at home. Other than that, I expect goals, at least three, and I like the 2.40 “over 2.5 goals” is at.
