Uruguay vs Ecuador
Competition: Copa America
Date: 17 June 2019
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
About ten days ago, Óscar Tabárez told reporters in a Press conference that Uruguay’s midfield is their most “promising” line, being quick to point out that he meant, compared to their roster in the two previous Copa América editions, their midfield now has players with the apparently perfect combination of quality and experience. Nahitan Nandez, Matías Vecino, Rodrigo Bentancur, Nicolás Lodeiro, it really feels like this is a top class midfield. As for the other seven in the starting lineup, they should be Fernando Muslera, Martín Cáceres, José Giménez, Diego Godín, Diego Laxalt, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez. The Uruguayans traveled to Brazil looking very confident, especially after seeing Suárez return from his knee injury looking sharp in their last friendly game, that 3-0 over Panama in Montevideo. Be reminded, Uruguay are… tiny, compared to Brazil, Argentina, and other South American countries, but when it comes to Copa América titles won, they are second to none.
I look at Uruguay and I see a team that has been working under the same coach since… ever, with a super clear idea of how they want to play, a group full of quality players who have proved before that when they play for their national team they are more than willing to sacrifice their ego, do all sorts of dirty job. Then, I look at Ecuador, and I see a coach who has failed to inspire the players, the fans, I see a country criticizing relentlessly their national team, and a group of players who, to me, look like they have already compromised with their… fate in this tournament. Ecuador have been anything between bad and mediocre in countless previous Copa América editions, even when they had a very good roster. I seriously doubt this time will be any better. As for Hernán Darío Gómez, their coach, he told reporters Ecuador’s target in Brazil these next weeks is “to learn”, sort of… lowering the bar of everyone’s expectations, and offering an “umbrella” to his players, to save them from the… rain of criticism that will fall on their heads if they don’t do well.
