Vasco da Gama vs Fluminense
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 20 July 2019
Kick-off: 16:00 CET
Vasco da Gama lost 2-1 to Gremio in Porto Alegre last weekend, taking the lead early from the penalty spot, staying 0-1 up until the 61st minute, and conceding the second late, in the 86th. I really liked their chances of earning at least a draw, and they could have earned it if they had… lasted – defensively – a few more minutes, and/or if the referee hadn’t had a crucial decision going Gremio’s way. Vanderlei Luxemburgo cannot count on suspended Rossi. The 26-year-old winger may not have scored yet in this Serie A edition, but no other Vasco player has had more attempts, or passes that resulted in attempts. Midweek, Vasco beat Boavista in a friendly game that was more like a training session, Luxemburgo liked what he saw, and is expected to have the same starting lineup, with just one change; Ricardo Graça is out, Colombian Oswaldo Henríquez is in, at the centre of defence, alongside Leandro Castán, who is back from injury. The other nine should be Fernando Miguel, Yago Pikachu, Henrique, Richard, Raul, Marquinho, Yan Sasse, Valdivia and Marrony. Vasco are just 16th in the table, on nine points from 10 matches.
Fluminense are not doing any better; same points, nine, one spot higher in the table, 15th, both right above the relegation line. Last weekend they got stuck to an… unacceptable 1-1 draw at home against Ceará, a hugely disappointing result. Unlike Vasco, whose next game is next weekend, Flu have to travel to Uruguay on Monday, as they are facing Peñarol Tuesday night, a Copa Sudamericana game. Fernando Diniz has to make some big decisions, regarding who will start against Vasco, who will stay on the bench, and who won’t play at all, so as to be at his/their 100% on Tuesday. The Serie A season is still relatively young, but the games against Peñarol are just two, and the margin of error there is much-much-much smaller… A couple of days ago, Fluminense welcomed back Wellington Nem, a “product” of their academy, who will play for them on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk until December.
