Vasco da Gama vs Sport Recife
Competition: Brazil Serie A
Date: 10 June 2018
Kick-off: 00:00 CET
As expected, Jorginho is Vasco da Gama’s new coach, less than a week after Zé Ricardo’s departure from the club. Midweek, they drew 1-1 with Cruzeiro away from home, a game in which they were very lucky to “escape” from, undefeated. They did score a beautiful goal and had a foul-kick on the post, but all in all, Cruzeiro were far superior almost throughout the game, and could have been given one, if not two penalties. Talking to the Press, Jorginho said that people will be left surprised seeing Vasco after the World Cup finals break, once he’s had the time to work with the team. They are 13th in the table, on 12 points, but with a game in hand, against Santos. As hosts, they have lost two of their last three home games, to Vitória and Botafogo.
Fellipe Bastos scored an absolutely sensational goal against Atlético Paranaense midweek, to give Sport Recife all three points. He tried his luck with a powerful and… weirdly “curvy” shot from a very long distance, between the center of the field and Atlético’s box, and somehow the ball went in. His success made his coach ask his players to do the… obvious, shoot more. Somehow, Sport players have spent weeks now mostly trying to get inside the box of their opponents, finishing their games with few shots outside the box. Sport are second in the table(!!), on 18 points, undefeated in their last five matches, and with just one defeat in their last nine, at Cruzeiro. Still, if you bet on them today to win the title, you would get a fantastic 26.00, because betting companies (and my guess is, their own fans as well, the most… realistic ones), don’t expect them to stat that high for too long.

Vasco are considered clear favorites to win the game, but when you have a team in such a good form as Sport, I feel it’s worth risking with them, no matter if Vasco have a new coach.
