Viktoria Plzen vs CSKA Moscow
Competition: UEFA Champions League
Date: 19 September 2018
Kick-off: 21:00 CET
Viktoria Plzen are back to the Champions League group stage after five years. Ever since then, they kept dropping out in August, either in the qualifiers or the play-offs. Despite having guaranteed “income” from their presence in the group stage, they kept a very low profile in the transfer market this summer. Some could call this a “sensible approach”, some could call it “lack of ambition”. In eight matches in Czechia’s championship, they have seven wins and a defeat. That defeat though was resounding, to write the least; 4-0 at Slavia Prague, the other team on 21 points from eight matches in the championship, but with a much better goal difference.
CSKA Moscow won three of their six group matches last season in the Champions League, finished on nine points, but that wasn’t enough to join Manchester United in the round of 16. They were left third, behind Basel as well. They started this season winning the Super Cup in Russia, beating city rivals Lokomotiv in extra-time, but their first weeks in the championship were very poor. They had six points from five matches, before destroying Ural and Ufa in back-to-back games earlier this month to improve their position in the table (12 points from seven matches). They have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four games, in which they have three wins and a draw, and a total score of 11-1(!). Central midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, one of Russia’s best players in the recent World Cup finals, is no longer at CSKA, he got transferred to Monaco for no less than 30m euros(!).

Viktoria Plzen have hosted CSKA once before, in 2013. They won 2-1, in a Champions League group stage game.
Viktoria Plzen vs CSKA Moscow: Prediction
The hosts are considered favorites to win the game, but I’m backing CSKA to leave Czechia with at least a point. They have gotten their act together lately, both defensively and offensively, and I feel they have the team to earn at least a point in this match.
