Villarreal vs Roma
Competition: Europa League
Date: 16 February 2017
Kick-off: 19:00 CET
This clash is a classic in the making for both of these teams are old-world clubs in each of their countries. There is much history and pomp around Roma in Italy, as well as Villarreal, so when they clash for a knockout game, it should be an intense meeting.
Villarreal were probably surprised to come in second in their group, which turned out to be a competitive one that went all the way to the last match. Osmanlispor managed top spot by a single point as even Zurich and Steaua Bucuresti tied on six points, three behind the qualifying Spanish side. Even the match ups in the group spoke of teams all vying for qualification, so in the end, a quality side like Villarreal should be happy to be through as now they can really try and cut loose and make a run through the knockout stages, but if there was a team that you do not want to come up against, it is probably the proud Roma side.
Roma topped their group, probably quite predictably as their opposition was hardly that challenging with Roma not losing a game in six – but they did draw half of their games which is a little disconcerting. Goals were not the problem for the Italians, it was more their inability to see off opposition, but now, seeing as they are second in Serie A, and they are in the knockout stages, you have to feel that this Roma side will be an entirely different prospect ahead of an exciting and big-name clash.
Villarreal vs Roma: Group stage form
Topping the group ahead of FC Astra, Viktoria and Austria Wein was not too much of a stretch for the famous Italian side. They won three and drew three, and scored 16 goals but also conceded seven.
Villarreal battled with their opponents, coming in behind Osmanlispor, but it was just by one point. However, they only won two games, drew three, but lost the least with one. Villarreal also scored nine goals and conceded eight.
Villarreal vs Roma: Prediction
This should be a really good game, and a great matchup between two very good teams. Villarreal will be at home, but their form is technically worse than that of Roma’s so in all reality this one could head towards a thrilling draw – even if no one scores.
Villarreal vs Roma: Tips
A draw is the most likely outcome, even a goalless draw. But if there is a goal to be had, it should be worth a punt on Dzeko doing it for Roma.
