Vitoria vs Botafogo
Competition: Brazilian Serie A
Date: 15 June 2017
Kick-off: 00:30 CET
Vitoria finally won their first game in the championship when they hosted Atletico Mineiro on Sunday, their first win in 45 days(!), since a 2-1 victory over Bahia in a Copa do Nordeste game in late April. Ever since then, they had drawn three times, and lost five games. Up until a couple of days ago they were at the bottom of the Serie A table, but having just won their first game and having a second straight one again at home, they hope to build on that 2-0 over Atletico Mineiro and move closer to the middle of the table. Center-forward Paulinho managed to… piss Vitoria fans off once again on Sunday, by missing an incredible chance to score. He has been in very poor form for weeks and weeks now, and the fact that he picked up his third yellow card and is not playing against Botafogo may be a good thing, not only for the team, but for him as well. Coach Alexandre Gallo defended him, said he knows his potential, but… he’s a striker, he needs to score, or else…
‘Draw or Coritiba’ in Sunday’s Botafogo vs Coritiba paid 1.85, and between the two I felt draw, at 3.20, had much more chances to come good. It did (2-2). Argentine center-back Joel Carli was the… man of the match for all the wrong and all the right reasons. Both Coritiba’s goal came from penalties, penalties that he committed (even though the second one wasn’t as clear as the first one). After that, with Botafogo 2-1 down, despite being a center-back, he started visiting Coritiba’s box(!), and he ended up scoring Botafogo’s equalizer. “It gets to you, you can’t see two penalties whistled against you and not get affected. I guess I stopped thinking clearly, I left my position, but it all went well in the end, I scored, at least we didn’t lose”, the Argentine told reporters after the game in Rio de Janeiro. Botafogo now have three draws and one defeat in their last four games, including a 1-1 draw to Sport Recife in the Copa do Brasil.
Vitoria vs Botafogo: Head-to-head Stats
Two wins for Vitoria, two for Botafogo, and one draw, in the last five games between these two in Salvador da Bahia.
Vitoria vs Botafogo: Prediction
Despite the fact that Vitoria looked very good against Atletico Mineiro in their 2-0 win on Sunday, and Botafogo failed to beat Coritiba at home and have three draws and five defeats away from home since mid April, I’m going against… logic, and I’m backing the visitors to earn at least a draw.
Vitoria vs Botafogo: Tips
‘Draw or Botafogo’ pays 1.66. Between the two, I feel a draw is much more probable. It’s at 3.00, and I like it because Botafogo have looked pretty decent away from home in their previous two games, drew at Flamengo, lost at Santos with an added time goal, and even against Coritiba, one of the most effective teams so far in this Serie A campaign, they would have gotten a better result if it weren’t for Carli’s… clumsy challenges and two penalties.
