Werder Bremen vs Schalke
Competition: Germany Bundesliga
Date: 8 March 2019
Kick-off: 20:30 CET
Max Kruse’s goal in the 74th minute salvaged a point for Werder Bremen last weekend at Wolfsburg. It was their third draw in a row, and to be more exact, their third 1-1 in a row. It’s worth noting that in eight matches in 2019 (including their Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund, they’ve stayed undefeated, but have won just twice (three times, if we include the Cup match, which they won on penalties). They sit 10th in the Bundesliga table, on 33 points, and if they are to earn a Europa League ticket, they really need to step on it. Pavlenka, Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Moisander, Augustinsson, M. Eggestein, Bargfrede, Klaassen, J. Eggestein, Kruse and Rashica, this is expected to be the starting lineup. Langkamp is definitely out, injured. The day before the game, Johannsson and Osako were considered doubtful.
Humiliating, I think that’s the word for last weekend’s defeat to Fortuna Dusseldorf. Schalke were blown to pieces at home, 0-4, a result that left their fans enraged, going that far as to ask the team’s captain to take his armband off(!). One point, that’s all Schalke have managed in their last five Bundesliga games, so it’s no wonder they are just 14th in the table, keeping an eye on Stuttgart, sitting 16th, occupying the spot that comes with playoffs at the end of the season (to avoid relegation). VfB are just four points behind Schalke today. In the midst of all this, Schalke have a Champions League game coming up, at Manchester City, but after losing 2-3 at home, their chances of eliminating Pep Guardiola’s side look… close to non-existent. Nübel, Sane, Bruma, Nastasic, Caligiuri, Stambouli, McKennie, Oczipka, Uth, Embolo and Burgstaller, these should be the first eleven, with the last two returning from injury. Schöpf and Serdar are unavailable, while Rudy was doubtful the day before the game.
