Wilstermann vs River Plate
Competition: Copa Libertadores
Date: 15 September 2017
Kick-off: 02:45 CET
Who would have thought that modest Wilstermann would make it to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores, when other teams, true football giants of the continent, have already gotten knocked out, and are watching the remainder of the competition from a distance. Qualifying for the last 16 was already surprise enough, but what the Bolivian side did against Atletico Mineiro in the first knock-out stage was… historic. Win, 1-0, at home, and… epic 0-0 in Belo Horizonte. Even before those games, I wrote that Wilstemann’s Libertadores campaign had already been a success. It will still be a major success even if they lose… 3-0 to River Plate, at home, and get eliminated before traveling to Argentina for the return leg. Last weekend they drew 1-1 to Petrolero Yacuiba at home. Despite dropping two points they remain first in the table in Bolivia’s championship.
Golden chance for River Plate to reach the semifinals, with all due respect to Wilstermann. After a very good group stage, River won at Guarani 2-0 in the first leg, simplifying things in the round of 16. Interestingly, back at home, they went 1-0 down, and were threatened with a second goal that would mean major trouble, but they made it 1-1, and finished the qualification off. It was the third home game this season they failed to win. They drew 1-1 to Emelec and lost 2-1 to Independiente Medellin in the group stage. Those were… harmless failures, since they had already qualified, but you start noticing a pattern, River dropping their guard when they feel their job is practically done. Last weekend they beat Banfield 3-1 at home, their second win in as many games in the new Superliga season in Argentina.

Wilstermann vs River Plate: Head to head Stats
Wilstermann have hosted River twice before, with the two teams having celebrated one win each. Both games were… decades ago though. Wilstermann won 1-0 in 1973(!), and River earned a 1-0 victory in 1982.
Wilstermann vs River Plate: Prediction
River are considered slight favorites to win, but I’m backing the hosts to earn at least a draw.
Wilstermann vs River Plate: Betting Tips
Wilstermann’s double chance pays 1.50. Deep down I expect a draw, at 3.20, and most probably in a game that will stay under 2.5 total goals.
