Zamora vs Colon Santa Fe
Competition: Copa Sudamericana
Date: 14 February 2018
Kick-off: 01:30 CET
Zamora beat Monagas 2-1 away from home on Friday, and their coach, Carlos Tornadijo, surprised many after the match, admitted that a 2-2 draw would have been a more fair result(!). Zamora have started 2018 great, first winning the Copa Bicentenaria, and then picking up seven points from their first three matches in Venezuela’s championship. They are second in the table, two points behind Portuguesa, the only team that have three wins in as many games. Zamora qualified for the Copa Sudamericana as 5th-placed in last season’s championship in Venezuela, grabbing the last ticket. Two years ago they eliminated Barcelona from Guayaquil (on penalties), but fell to Montevideo Wanderers, losing both legs 1-0.
Colón didn’t finish higher than 11th in last season’s championship in Argentina, but even that position was good enough to earn them a Copa Sudamericana ticket. They traveled to Venezuela with just one real problem, the absence of midfielder Matías Fritzler, who still has to serve an one-match ban, a… relic from a suspension he got as an Huracán player, before moving to the Santa Fe side. Last Friday they earned a rather unexpected win at Newell’s Old Boys thanks to an 82nd-minute goal by Guillermo Ortíz. It was their first positive result after four defeats in a row, two in 2017, before the break, and two in late January and early February, after the restart of the championship in Argentina. Last time they played in the Copa Sudamericana was in 2012. They eliminated Racing Club (beating them twice!), but fell to Cerro Porteño in the next round, losing 2-1 at home, and then again 2-1 in Asunción.
